Inspiring Children's Books About the Environment

Beth Wood:  Heroes of the Environment tells true stories of 12 people in North America who've done wonderful things for our environment. Author Harriet Rohmer's stories introduce heroes from teens to adults who have come up with ways to help the environment.

Kelly R.:  A lesson in ecological responsibility through the approachable style of beloved Dr. Seuss.

Sue Krawitz Tandoc:  Sylvia Earle's love of the ocean took her on her life journey as a marine scientist. In Life in the Ocean by Claire Nivola, we learn about her diving accomplishments and research. She became an Explorer with the National Geographic Society and Scientist with NOAA. Sylvia also set diving depth records, became an expert on oil spills and advocate for the ocean and ocean life.

Sylvia has spent much of her life in the ocean or working towards helping ocean life be safe and healthy. She inspires kids to fight for what they believe in and follow their life's passion.

Sue Krawitz Tandoc:  Many: The Diversity of Life on Earth by Nicola Davies is a wonderful book to explore the millions of species of animals, insects, plants and more that inhabit Earth. Emily Sutton's intricate and beautiful illustrations adds to the point that people need to take care of our planet and all living creatures for survival. The book teaches children that Earth's inhabitants are diverse and unique so they learn to appreciate all living creatures, whether it is an animal, tree, vegetable or person. Kids will discover how they fit in the world among the millions of other beings on Earth.

Erin P.:  Todd Parr explores the subject of environmental protection and conservation in this eco-friendly picture book that is even printed on recycled paper. A great feature is the tips/reminders to help kids learn how they can "go green" in their own lives.

diego Uturi:  The Adventures of Camellia N. is a visually stunning and engaging book series that sheds light on the beauty of our environment, natural resources and the many unique wildlife living on Planet Earth. The Rainforest is the newest book in the series and is pure delight, featuring characters your children will love!

Tim Ponisciak:  The Berenstain Bears are a multi-generational favorite. This book tells the story of how the whole Bear family decides to do everything they can to help Mother Earth.

Erin P.:  If you have a child who is interested in history, or feel that your child could be inspired by someone’s life work, check out the “Ordinary People Change The World” series by author and historian Brad Meltzer. This particular book tells the story of Jane Goodall, the world famous conservationist. It is told through a first person, comic book style approach that makes the story very accessible for a child.

Erin P.:  This book is a part of the All Aboard series and showcases a number of the best National Parks including Acadia, Smokey Mountains, Grand Canyon, Zion, Grand Tetons, Rocky Mountains, Yosemite and Olympic. Your kids will love this beautifully illustrated book and will gain an appreciation for the natural beauty of the U.S.A.

Erin P.:  A Grand Old Tree focuses on helping children understand the balance of nature. Author Mary Newell DePalma tells the story of the old tree that flowers and provides shelter for forest animals, but also shares how, even after the tree dies, it continues to be a part of the land and the environment in a helpful way.

Erin P.:  Most people are not familiar with the story of Katherine Sessions, but your kids may find her fascinating. This book shares how Sessions, when she moved to San Diego, was disappointed with the lack of green space and trees. She took it upon herself to turn San Diego into an everlasting oasis. This picture book is sure to be a favorite for your kids.

Erin P.:  I read one of Jane Goodall's books a few years ago and I was excited to see that there are books written for children to introduce them to this fascinating scientist and conservationist. Jane Goodall is a world-famous observer of chimpanzees. In this book, by Jeanette Winter, early readers can learn about Goodall and her amazing work with animals.

Gina I.:  Discussing climate change can be a little overwhelming for kids (and with good reason!) Basher Science does it again with 'Climate Change', teaching kids all the ins and outs of this hot topic in a fun and informative way. It is a great book for Earth Day, with topics including: ice caps, the greenhouse effect, acid rain, ocean systems, fossil fuels, carbon footprint, recycling, renewable energy, and more.

Sue Krawitz Tandoc:  One Plastic Bag by Miranda Paul is the true story of one woman, Isatou Ceesay, making a difference in Gambia by taking discarded plastic bags and making them into recycled purses. She worked hard with other community members to make a difference and they continue to do so. By turning the bags into useful items, they are decreasing disease, growing healthy food, saving livestock and creating a cleaner environment.

This book will demonstrate to children the importance of recycling for the Earth as well as the damage that can be done by trash that is not disposed of properly.

Erin P.:  Author Monica Wellington wrote this cute little story about Gabby and her Grandma spending time together and doing good things for the environment, including recycling and using homemade cloth bags while shopping! I like it because it introduces simple, environmentally-helpful ideas that even little readers can implement in their own lives.
