Second Language Classes for Columbus Kids

Hannah Scott:  Ohio has a rich German history, and the Ohio German Languages School offers a chance to keep that culture alive through second language classes. Divided by age and current skill level, your child will begin learning basic German through stories, songs, games, play, etc. and progress to more challenging skills like reading and writing in German.

Hannah Scott:  Many parents begin teaching their children basic sign language as a baby, but don’t continue after the child becomes verbal. Why not keep the progress going? The Columbus Speech and Hearing Center offers 8-week American Sign Language classes for families periodically throughout the year aimed to improve communication abilities with those who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing.

Hannah Scott:  By incorporsting activities, songs, and games, kids will develop Spanish language skills in a fun (and effective!) atmosphere at the Columbus Spanish Place. Saturday morning classes are great for busy schedules, and parents are welcome to join the kids for class.

Cost: $75/6-week session

Hannah Scott:  The Columbus School of Chinese follows a task-based learning method, in which students are assigned tasks they must complete in Chinese. It’s an immersive environment, facilitated by native and near-native speakers. Mandarin Chinese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, so this is one to seriously consider for your kids!

Hannah Scott:  The Russian Club seeks to provide instruction that celebrates and preserves the Russian culture for a new generation. With continued instruction, kids will learn to read and write fluently in Russian, develop a broader vocabulary, and expand their worldview.

Age: 3.5 - 16

Hannah Scott:  The Cultured Kids Club offers small, immersive language classes with native speaking teachers. Choose from Chinese, French, or Spanish and watch your child develop proficiency naturally through fun, engaging activities.

Age: 18 months - 14 years

Cost: from $80/month

Hannah Scott:  Spanish for Ninos combines the time-tested methods of early childhood development programs with Spanish language goals to help your child learn Spanish naturally and effectively. Activities include storytelling, drama, music, games, crafts, and culture.

Age: 6 months - 12 years

Cost: $35 registration fee; $10-$12/class
